On March 14th 1961, an executive
left Jaguar's Coventry
Factory in Southern England
at seven o'clock in the evening for a scheduled date with the
world's automotive press at noon the following day in Geneva,
Switzerland. Driving all night, and at times at or near the secret
car's maximum speed of 150mph, he was delivering the newly completed,
gunmetal-gray prototype of what auto aficionados would subsequently
declare "the most exciting production car the world has ever
seen". This car, which would become internationally known by
its single synonym--XKE, was unveiled on schedule to the press
the next day, and launched into automotive history. This is just
one example of the many stories told and written about the early
history of the Series I XKE, a car that was produced in a small
factory in England from 1961 to early 1967, first with a 3.8
Liter engine and latter with the larger 4.2 Liter engine, that
was rated at 265 horsepower and would do 0 to 100mph in 14 seconds,
and then from 100mph back to a standstill, in just 4 seconds.
It could easily range from 10mph up to 150mph in 4th gear alone,
without any engine hesitation or roughness, all the while getting
22mpg gas mileage. It was a spectacularly successful car that
Car and Driver called "the single most recognizable sports car in the
world".The driver of an early XKE
would look out over seven feet of a handsomely contoured hood
("bonnet") that had the added effect of becoming more aerodynamically
stable as speeds increased. Racecar drivers like Jackie Stewart,
Sterling Moss and Graham Hill consistently beat the Ferrari's,
the Mercedes' and the Aston Martin's of their day at U.S. and
European racetracks, and yet it has been told that Jackie Stewart
drove his Series I XKE not only on various racetracks, but on
his honeymoon as well. Jaguar made the only serious
modifications to the Series I starting in September 1964 with
the introduction of the larger 4.2 Liter engine, a fully-synchromesh
four-speed manual gearbox, a new diaphragm spring clutch, and
larger disc brakes. In addition, the interior was improved with
more comfortable and supportive seats, a fitted glove box and
center console, and for the first time, standard equipped armrests.
By all accounts, the 4.2 Series I's were the most valuable and
cherished of all XKE's, as they were the last of the original "covered
headlight cars" before any of the U.S. dictated pollution-control
requirements became standard for all production models of the
XKE.1956 AND 1957 XK
